Banner Making course

 

A 10 week Banner making course was held at ADAB which resulted in the learners displaying their banner at a national conference held in Liverpool.

Banner - making is the ancient craft of sewing banners.  Techniques used include applique, fabric painting and patchwork etc.

The learners learned the following:

  • Canvas work
  • Cross stitching
  • Embroidery
  • Felting
  • Needlework

15 learners had the opportunity to visit the People's History Museum in Manchester to see the largest collection of historic trade union and political banners in the world.  There are over 400 banners in the collection including the world's oldest trade union banner, that of the Liverpool Tinplate Workers of 1821.

They were given a tour of the Museum and were told the stories behind some of these banners.
